Type-Studies
During my Semester of Typography we learned about how to manipulate typefaces, have a better understanding of type, create out own letters, and experiment with relationships between fonts, letters, and negative space. The Bitmap monogram (top right), Type anatomy (bottom), and Sequential Type Work (top left). All helped get a foundation for working in InDesign and understanding Type such as Typefaces, fonts, serifs, kerning, leading, etc..
Poster
Tasked to create a poster for a Festival with no images and only type, I chose the Thai Festival of Songkran. Songkran is a centuries old festival that signifies renewal and the beginning of the Thai New Year. Today, it is that and a country wide water fight that lasts for almost a week. At first I wanted it to be very overwhelming visually with lots of iconography. The idea of a large scale water fight sounds like it needs a lot of symbols and eye vomit. The more I added the less I liked ideas I had come up with. Not only were adding water guns made of type hard but also didn’t look the best coming out. After almost giving up, I was just doing some experiments and I came up with a simpler layout that although wasn’t what I thought of initally, turned into something I thought was visually appealing. Trying to come up with a cohesive grid layout and only using type was the biggest challenge. While there is room for some cleanup and symmetry I think there was also some decent designs within.
Magazine
After picking a random article I put my own spin on how the Magazine spread might look. Can Machines suffer is an article about how our present treatment of AI could affect the way it could treat us in the future. I thought that this assignment would be easier but the challenge of creating a decent grid that coexists with its icons and illustrations is difficult. I thought my color layout was decent, and there is too much space that is neglected here. I think with some touch ups and more illustrations this could transform into a stunning spread.
Packaging
Challenged to create our own Logo and Package, I chose a Ramen package. While it doesn’t have the characteristics of a normal ramen noodle package. I believe that the style emulates me quite well. During the process I made both the background and logo almost streetwear like. As a fan of fashion and streetwear, I thought it worked in it’s own way. At first although I thought it looked more aesthetically pleasing in black and white adding some color added a new feel to the packaging.
Menus
The menu of a local favorite breakfast spot needed work. Old timey and simple, I used a style of typeface and grid I thought appropriate for the style of restaurant.
Bio
My name is Max Roesner, I’m from Columbia Falls, Montana. I am currently a Graphic Design Student at MSU. I want design to be fun, colorful, and free. In my spare time you can find me spending time with my friends, playing video games, skiing, hiking, and goofing off. Currently one of my passions is traveling and I hope to hit every continent except Antartica once.
